July 19, 2007, 9:00 AM EST update

After many, many hours of intense work from "Nightwatch", the first independent "Hello World"* application has been compiled and launched on the iPhone. This was made possible using the "[[ARM/Mach-O Toolchain]]", Nightwatch's "special project", that he has been working on so carefully over the past few weeks. Certain parts of the toolchain (such as the assembler) are being refined and tested and these will be released as soon as possible.

iPhone Partially Unlocked, Calls Without AT&T Contract

The amazing wizards at the iPhone Dev Wiki have been able to partially unlock the iPhone using a new application called iASign. It won"t fully unlock the iPhone, but the hack will allow you to use any existing Cingular/AT&T; Pre-paid SIM so you don"t have to get a contract with AT&T.; That"s full call functionality without two years of slavery.

Shell Access!

Hackintosh reports that hackers have gained shell access to the iPhone. For you non-techie readers, this means that we may soon see some true "home brew": applications that run on an iPhone, that are not authorized by Apple (anything locked down from third-party development is a target for hackers--like DVD copy protection, and the Sony Playstation Portable. See for example the thriving PSP hackers community).

DVD Jon hacks iPhone activation: iPhone without AT&T

The best thing about the iPhone in my opinion is that its a phone with a music player and whats great is that the music player is the best iPod Apple has ever made. So I am not sure how many of you out there are going to be excited to hear that DVD Jon has hacked the iPhone activation such that you can activate the iPhone without ATT. More details available after the jump....
